Richmond, May 2016. The Lord True, CBE, Leader of the Council of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, has joined the Honorary Committee of the Portuguese Centenary Appeal. The announcement was made through a letter addressed to the Chairman, Anthony Bailey.

Lord True has been a councillor in the London Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames from 1986 to 1990 and since 1998. He has served as Leader of the Council since 2010, having previously served as Deputy Leader from 2002 to 2006 and Leader of the Opposition from 2006 to 2010. He has also been, since 2006, a trustee of the Richmond Civic Trust.

Richmond has important Portuguese connections through prominent historic Portuguese figures such as King Manuel II who lived in the Borough from 1913 to 1932. Central to the appeal is the creation of the first ever War Memorial in Britain commemorating the Portuguese fallen of the First World War and the erection of a statue of King Manuel II in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.
