London, 13 July 2017. The Rt Hon Lord Watson of Richmond, CBE, has agreed to act as trustee of the Portuguese Centenary Appeal. Lord Watson also serves as member of the Honorary Committee of the Appeal.
Lord Watson is currently the Chairman of CTN Communications, a pre-eminent multi-media, consultancy, and production company. He is a Fellow of the Royal Television Society and a former chairman. He was Head of Media at the European Commission for five years and European Chairman of Burson-Marsteller for over ten years.
Lord Watson holds many visiting and honorary posts and doctorates at universities in Britain and abroad, and recently was awarded an honorary doctorate by Birmingham University where he chairs the Advisory Board of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Values.
He was elected as High Steward of Cambridge University for life in 2010. He is an Honorary Fellow of Jesus College, a Patron of the Churchill Archives at Churchill College, and Chairman of The Cambridge Foundation.
A former President of the Liberal Party, Lord Watson played a leading role in the merger between the British Liberal Party and the Social Democrats. He was appointed CBE in 1985 and raised to the peerage in 1999.
Lord Watson is a committed internationalist and serves as the President of the British-German Association, Chairman of the Franco-British Society, Vice-President of the English Speaking Union, and for six years Chairman of the Council of Commonwealth Societies. Currently he is Consultative Chairman for an online and offline platform linking Vienna and London.
A resident of Richmond-upon-Thames and Chairman of the Father Thames Trust he promotes the bond between Richmond, Surrey and Richmond, Virginia. His second home is in Somerset where he serves as the Chairman of the Friends of Wells Cathedral.
He has been awarded The Churchill Medal and hold several foreign awards including Knight Grand Cross of Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Romania and the George Kastrioti Skanderberg Order of the Republic of Albania. In September 2015 Lord Watson was invested a Knight of the Habsburg-Lothringen Order of St. Georg.
