Sintra, July 2016. The Chairman of the Portuguese Centenary Appeal, Anthony Bailey, and the Mayor of the City of Sintra, Dr Basílio Horta, held an official meeting on 12 July 2016 at the Câmara Municipal de Sintra.
The official meeting followed the Mayor’s recent acceptance to join the Honorary Committee of Portuguese Centenary Appeal.
They discussed ways to promote the long-standing relationship between England and Portugal through the building of the first ever war memorial in the United Kingdom of the Portuguese fallen of the First World War, the erection of a statue of King Manuel II of Portugal in London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, where the King lived during his exile, and the restoration of the Church of St James’s in Twickenham as a new spiritual centre for the Portuguese in London.
Sintra and Richmond upon Thames share many common features, house historic royal palaces, and are both twinned with Fontainebleau in France.
