Lisbon, February 2016. His Excellency Dr João Soares, Minister of Culture of the Portuguese Republic has accepted an invitation to join the Honorary Committee of the Portuguese Centenary Appeal.
The announcement was made during a meeting held at the Ministry of Culture at the National Palace of Ajuda in Lisbon attended by the Royal Patron of the Appeal, HRH The Duke of Braganza and the Chairman of the Appeal, Sir Anthony Bailey.
João Soares was born in Lisbon, in 1949. He is graduate in Law. He founded the publishing house Perspectivas e Realidades. He was member of the Assembly of the Republic (MP) between 1987 and 1990 and, again, since 2002. He was Councillor responsible for Culture in Lisbon City Hall. He was Mayor of Lisbon between 1995 and 2002. He was President of UCCLA from 1996 to 2002. He was member of the Council of State from 1998 to 2002. He was member of the European Parliament in 1994 and 1995, and member of the Bureau of European Parliament. He was Vice-president and then President of the Parliamentary Assembly of OSCE (from July 2008 to July 2010). He was Member of the Superior Council of National Defence since August 201 and was Member of the Supervisory Board of the Information System of the Portuguese Republic since March 2013.
